As I plop down on the couch, exhausted, I catch myself smiling at how God communicates to me.
I have been chasing my, today, 10-month old daughter around the house, digging potting soil out of her mouth and from underneath her fingernails, closing cabinets behind her, and picking kitty hair out from between her fingers. You may think, “That’s normal, why is she exhausted because of that!?”. You’re right, but you see, my daughter, who is my first born, has only been crawling for a week and hasn’t moved much except today. And for this germophobe momma that’s a lot to deal with. I grew up in a very neat, clean, tiny country, where everyone takes off their shoes at the front door when they enter a home. And yes, I keep that Swiss tradition going in our Texan home, much to my husband’s dismay. Oh how glad I am today that I have been doing exactly that.
10-months ago, the mere thought of my child digging in dirt, eating it, crawling everywhere, licking the bottom of all the shoes that are sitting by the entrance.. well, let’s just say that a mud run sounded a lot better to me than this.
But today, as I was placing fresh sheets on our bed, while at the same time making sure my little lady wasn’t eating the little ant traps in the master bathroom (and why do we have to have an ant problem the same week my daughter starts crawling???), this song popped into my head:
“It’s a new season, it’s a new day.”
At first I only heard the beginning of the lyrics and thought “True that, it sure is a new season. No kidding!” but I just felt a tugging on my heart as if someone was saying, don’t stop there, keep going. The lyrics to that song continue with:
“A fresh anointing is coming my way.
It’s a season of power and prosperity.
It’s a new season and it’s coming my way.”
No doubt that tender tugging on my heart was the Holy Spirit. And with a gentle voice He continued to speak to me:
A year ago you didn’t think you’d be able to deal with the combination of a baby and dirt and germs in a loving and grace-filled kind of way. But today you can. Never forget that when I, God, let you enter a new season, I always, give you the grace and anointing to go with it.
Wow! That may be a ‘no-brainer’. We always hear this concept about the ‘big’ Christian callings, like a well-known conference speaker, a worship leader and even a government figure. But “Hello!”, what about the little things, or should I say, the biggest calling there is in life: raising a tiny human being to become a man or woman of God.
I could have wrapped up today without that song and tugging on my heart, and it would have been fine. I still would have loved being my little girl’s mommy with or without dirt. But I love my Heavenly Father. He is wonderful and always knows how to brighten the day, in this case through a love note in the form of a song.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
– Psalm 37:4
As I wrap up this post I want to encourage you that no matter what circumstance or season you may be facing, as long as you hang on to the hand of Jesus, delight in Him, you will have the grace and anointing to walk through any circumstance.
